The open space areas of Laurel School were acquired from Hayward Unified School District (HUSD) in December 2025 for the purpose of creating a new park. HARD has begun the design process for this exciting new addition to the District.
Help Create a Neighborhood Park
Help Create a neighborhood park! Convey your ideas for a park to designers from BFS Landscape Architects and HARD staff at upcoming community event:
Date: Saturday, March 28, 2026, at 10:00am – 1:00pm Location: Northern open space at Laurel School / 2652 Vergil Court, Castro Valley

Project Background
Located south of Interstate 580, this Castro Valley neighborhood was identified as a park-deficient area in HARD’s 2017 Parks Master Plan. And the 2023 surplusing of the Laurel School site by HUSD was crucial as it is one of the last open space areas in this neighborhood.
Community Meetings
HARD anticipates three community meetings as part of the overall design process:
- March 28, 2026 – Process Update and Community Priorities
- May 2, 2026 – Design Alternatives
- May 30, 2026 – Final Proposed Park Design
All three meetings will be on HARD’s new property, the playfield north of the school’s parking lot, and lead by BFS landscape Architects, a San Jose-based design firm with significant experience with community outreach, park design and several with HARD.
