Welcome to New London, Connecticut, on the 4th of July in 1906. Nat Miller is the town newspaperman, and his 16-year-old son, Richard, has an affinity for poetry and philosophy that sometimes gets him in trouble. Forbidden to court his neighbor Muriel by the girl's father, Richard goes on a bender that forces him to learn the lesson of his youthful indiscretions the hard way. O'Neill's only well-known comedy is a nostalgic coming-of-age story that gives us a backward glimpse into middle-class family life in turn-of the-century America.
