Marie Belzer
Marie Belzer was awarded the Monthly Volunteer Recognition Award for May 2013 for her volunteer service in the Senior Center Program.
Marie has volunteered at the Kenneth C. Aitken Senior Center since she started volunteering over 17 years ago. Marie started by working at the front desk greeting customers, answering the phones, scheduling appointments and offering a friendly face and a smile. She has also helped with the senior lunch program; helping prepare the meals, serve the meals and clean up.
Currently, Marie volunteers and teaches a Crochet and Knitting class on Wednesdays from 12:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. This drop-in class meets weekly and has a steady attendance of 10-15 students each Wednesday. The class gives the participants a place to gather and show off their work, as well as a place for beginners to learn the craft. Marie is an excellent instructor. Participants can begin the class with absolutely no knowledge and leave with a scarf or hat after just a few weeks. The class also allows seniors to meet new people and socialize with each other. They bring in baked goodies and laugh and enjoy the afternoon together. Marie also encourages students to donate their handmade hats and scarves and she mails them to soldiers in war zones.
