Environmental Practices
Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (H.A.R.D.) dedicates ourselves to the maintaining the environment, supporting our community through sustainable practices, environmental education, and environmental justice initiatives. H.A.R.D. utilizes these practices in order to preserve and restore our natural environments while providing accessible green spaces to all community members.
GREEN PURCHASING POLICY
By including environmental considerations in our purchasing decisions, along with the traditional concerns of price, performance, and availability, H.A.R.D. will promote practices that improve public health and safety, reduce pollution, and conserve natural resources and energy. HARD focuses on purchasing products that are biobased, biodegradable, carcinogen-free, chlorofluorocarbon (CC)-free, compostable, durable, energy efficient, heavy metal free (e.g., no lead, mercury, cadmium, Less hazardous, Low volatile organic compound (VOC) content, low-toxicity, made from rapidly renewable materials, persistent, bio- accumulative toxic (PBT)-free, recyclable, recycled content, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, reduced packaging, refurbished, resource efficiency, reusable, upgradable, and water efficient.
THREE STREAM TRASH, RECYCLE, AND COMPOST
H.A.R.D. is implementing three stream services at all facilities that produce over 10gal of recycle and organic waste. New recycle and compost bins will be placed next to every trash can at H.A.R.D. facilities with appropriate signage in order to educate the public on how to properly dispose of their waste.
Did you know that recycling one glass bottle saves enough energy to light a 100 watt lightbulb for four hours? Americans throw away over 11 million tons of glass bottles and jars each year. Recycling saves 25-30% of the energy used to make glass from virgin materials.
Benefits of composting include reducing the need for chemical fertilizers, encouraging the production of beneficial bacteria and fungi that break down organic matter to create humus (a rich nutrient-filled material), and reducing methane emissions from landfills and lowering our carbon footprint.
PARKS AND FACILITIES
H.A.R.D. is dedicated to maintaining our parks and facilities with the most green practices possible such as using localized composting, disposing of green waste properly, using water saving irrigation practices, utilizing integrated pest management, as well as planting native plants at our parks and trails.
EDUCATION AND AWARENESS
H.A.R.D. offers a multitude of camps including the Bay Shrimps Day Camp at the Hayward Shoreline encouraging kids to learn about their environment and the restoration of the salt marshes that line the bay. We also have the Sulphur Creek Nature Center that rehabilitates native wildlife and offers virtual educational programs to children and classrooms.
