On March 23rd, the Hayward Fire Department (HFD), led by Fire Chief Garrett Contreras, proactively launched the first free COVID 19 testing site in the country for our community and the greater East Bay. As the Coronavirus pandemic began to peak, the Hayward Fire Department swiftly implemented a drive-through testing clinic and secured high-quality lab testing capability. This model has served as an example throughout the U.S.
For the past 16 weeks, the HFD's leadership during an unprecedented time has been evidenced by their commitment to the health, safety and wellness of the residents of our District. They have shown the ability to mobilize and respond effectively during a crisis. Their team has tested more than 18,000 individuals for COVID 19. With the highest infection control techniques employed, not one of their staff working the testing site has tested positive for the Coronavirus. The Hayward Fire Department’s COVID testing site is providing 30% of the testing in Alameda County.
This is the time when the HFD prepares for fire safety and wildfire protection. Many of the HFD have volunteered their time to assist with the testing initiative in addition to their regular duties, and have worked tirelessly to combat the spread of COVID 19.
We are most appreciative of Hayward Fire Department’s dedicated efforts over the past five months. On behalf of the HARD Board of Directors and HARD Foundation Board we commend you for your partnership, innovative thinking and responsiveness in protecting our District during unprecedented times. |
