February 2020

Sam and Retha Martin have been volunteering with the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District since December 2015. Sam is a devoted Van Driver and member of the Senior Van Driver’s Committee that meets quarterly to plan upcoming Senior Van Day Trips. Retha volunteers at the Kenneth Aitken Senior Center front desk every other Monday morning. The District is so fortunate to have this dynamic duo as part of our HARD team. Sam always comes to the van committee meetings organized with great ideas for future trips. He schedules multiple trips each quarter, going to museums, wineries, the Dicken’s Fair and other places of interest. Sam has an impeccable rapport with the seniors and they always enjoy the trips he coordinates.  His excellence for safety stems from a career driving for UPS. Sam enables HARD to provide safe, high quality travel programs that enrich the quality of life for our community. Retha is a very dedicated volunteer. She is hardworking, helpful and a friendly face at the Senior Center Front Desk. Her volunteer duties consist of helping participants make appointments for social services, providing center and class information, registering students for classes and trips, answering phone calls, checking in participants for the lunch program, and completing daily clerical work. Retha is thorough, organized and able to multitask with ease. Mondays are very busy and can be a little overwhelming as we get numerous phone calls and have a lot of activities going on at the Senior Center. Retha doesn’t miss a beat. Retha is always willing to lend a hand on special projects and enjoys staying busy. Sam and Retha are great assets to the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District and are very deserving to receive the Board of Directors Volunteer of the Month Award.
