The Volunteer Hayward Program recognizes V-O-Cal “Volunteer for Outdoor California” as the volunteer of the month for July based on their outstanding efforts to help restore the trail at East Avenue Park. V-O-Cal provides a volunteer workforce for large-scale trail maintenance and construction projects, habitat restoration, and related land stewardship activities on public lands in partnership with public agencies and other nonprofit organizations.
V-O-Cal worked the weekend from Friday, June 14, to Sunday, June 16, 2019 at East Avenue Park. They set up camp, including a kitchen fully stocked with food for the volunteers, outdoor showers, they brought tools for the trail maintenance, set up restrooms and volunteers brought their own tents to stay through the duration. In addition to working the full weekend, there were multiple site visits prior to the work to determine the scope of work that best met the needs of East Avenue
Park. Volunteers worked on projects that included building steps at the amphitheater; building a new section of trail to provide better access to the broader trail system; restoring a lot of the drainage system for the trail; and, to trim several trees. In total 72 volunteers completed the scope of work that was planned and took on more tasks exceeding expectations.
The District is recognizing V-O-Cal as a group, and in particular the project leaders Francesca Verdier, who was the project lead, Inome Callahan who was the project technical lead, and Joe Cavaness, who had an important job as head cook for the weekend. It was a pleasure to work with the entire V-O-Cal group on the East Ave Project and the District hopes that this will become an annual project between the two organizations.
