Congratulations to Our Volunteer of the Month

November 2011

Joel EllioffMr. Joel Ellioff has been selected for the Monthly Volunteer Recognition Award for November 2011. He has been a volunteer in the Senior Adult Program for the past ten years and has donated a total of 562 volunteer hours this year alone. Mr. Ellioff volunteers in many different ways in our Senior Adult Program at the Hayward Senior Center. He is a volunteer driver for the trips and tours program, and also helps with the nutrition/lunch program and the woodshop program.

The day trips and tours program gives seniors the opportunity to visit places in the Bay Area and include museums, cultural attractions, gardens and many others that seniors are unable to visit due to their driving limitations. Being a volunteer driver comes with a great deal of responsibility as well. On Tuesday and Thursday Joel volunteers in the woodshop where he insures that all participants have signed up for the safety training course, inspects all machines prior to their use, and monitors the safety of all class participants during woodshop class. If all of the above is not enough, Joel uses his lunch break on Tuesday and Thursday to volunteer in the kitchen where he helps serve hot lunches. In addition to his volunteer time with HARD, he is a volunteer with the California Highway Patrol where he organizes a large crab feed, with proceeds benefitting the next generation scholarships.

He will be eligible for the Volunteer of the Year Award for 2011, which will be announced in January, 2012.
