, a volunteer in the Income Tax Assistance Program
at the Hayward and the Kenneth C. Aitken Senior Center since 2002, has
been selected for the March 2010 Monthly Volunteer Recognition Award.
She started volunteering her services over seven years ago at the Kenneth
C. Aitken Senior Center, where she received training from the Volunteer
Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) and helped low to moderate income
seniors prepare their income tax returns. This volunteer position is
not only very demanding, but it takes the ability to pay attention to
detail, work well with numbers, learn new tax laws and work face to face
with seniors who must file their IRS and State Income Tax Returns, which
can be often daunting and stressful. Delina partakes in a week-long
training every January to learn the new tax law, learn updates on the
computer program “Tax Wise” and she must pass a test in order to volunteer. Her
experience, accurate tax knowledge and her kind and gentle demeanor attracts
many seniors, who specifically request her services.
For the 2009/2010 tax season, Delina went above and beyond her regular
duties. In addition to filing income tax returns, she became the
Income Tax site coordinator at the Hayward Area Senior Center. This
involves transmitting the returns electronically to the IRS and the State,
trouble-shooting a tax return if it has been rejected and learning and
mentoring other tax volunteers. Hundreds of seniors are able to
take advantage of having their income taxes done for free because of
individuals like Delina, who is very dependable, and truly dedicated
to seniors in our area. She is a great asset to the Senior Programs
and the Senior Center staff is thrilled to acknowledge her and thank
her for her volunteer services at the Hayward and the Kenneth C. Aitken
Senior Centers.
She will be eligible for the Volunteer of the Year Award for 2010, which
will be announced in January of 2011.
