has been selected for the Monthly Volunteer Recognition Award for February 2007. He has been a volunteer in the Senior Adult Program at the Kenneth C. Aitken Senior Center since 1998. The District is very fortunate to have Burt Yin share his talents and time.
After retiring as a principal with the Oakland Unified School District, Burt Yin turned to volunteerism to give back to his community and to improve the life for others. He is a tremendous volunteer and a great asset to the Older Adult Program where he serves on the Senior Program Van Committee that meets every other month to help plan day trips that leave from the Hayward Senior Center, the Kenneth C. Aitken Senior Center and the Ashland Community Center. Being a van driver comes with a great deal of responsibility. In addition to his volunteer service with the District, Burt Yin volunteers for the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, City Team Ministries in Oakland, Asian Health Services in Oakland and his church. Burt and his wife even volunteered their time in ravaged Louisiana, after Hurricane Katrina.
He goes above and beyond with his duties to the Older Adult Program. For example, the trip to the San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade was on a very busy Saturday evening, when traffic was heavy and the trip took some extra planning, which allowed the seniors to see and enjoy an event they normally would not have attended. Burt Yin has shown true dedication and has been very dependable for over six years; he is a great leader and role model for other van drivers and his volunteer efforts have truly made a positive impact on the older adults he has met and provided service for.
He will be eligible for the Volunteer of the Year Award for 2007, which will be announced in late January.
