has been selected for the Monthly Volunteer Recognition
Award for January 2010 for her volunteer work in the Nature Program where
she has been a dedicated volunteer at the Sulphur Creek Nature Center
for the last thirteen years. In 2009, Carolyn donated over 300
hours and over her entire tenure has logged in more than 4,000 hours.
Carolyn began in 1997 as a wildlife rehabilitation volunteer. She
worked the morning shift, cleaning and caring for our rodent colony and
the critters that were a part of our Lending Library. She then
expanded her interests and talents to taking on a morning rehab shift. This
job is very detail oriented, as it requires the preparation of specialized
food diets for the hundreds of animals that are under the care of our
wildlife rehabilitation program.
In early 1999, Carolyn joined the team of Wildlife Docents that educates
and enriches the lives of over 20,000 students each year. Training
for this particular job involves several weeks of classes on natural
history, and presenting techniques along with months of animal handling. As
a docent she helps the education staff by manning booths at fairs, and
assisting in our adult and elementary educational programs. Through
her docent work she became heavily involved with our rest home outreach
program. This team of specially trained docents goes out to over
40 local convalescent hospitals as well as centers dedicated to the physically
and mentally disabled. She now heads up this team that works in
conjunction with the Community Assistance for the Retarded and Handicap
(CARH). In 2009, Carolyn oversaw her team do 94 outreach programs
to over 2300 infirmed residents and clients.
Carolyn is a person we can always count on to be at the many fairs and
festivals we attend as well as offering her time and services for the
Unhaunted House, Wildlife Fair and other special events. It is
not too often that we are able to have such a versatile, dynamic and
energetic volunteer that can fill so many shoes and is so easy to get
along with. Carolyn is a wonderfully generous person, with many
talents and we are very proud to make this nomination.
She will be eligible for the Volunteer of the Year Award for 2010, which
will be announced in January of 2011. |
