,
who has been a volunteer in the Senior Adult Program at the Kenneth C.
Aitken Senior Center for the past eleven years, has been selected for
the Monthly Volunteer Recognition Award for January 2009.
Since 1998 she has made a positive impact on the Senior Programs and
the overall environment. Beverly helps out in the Senior Nutrition
Program, working alongside the chef, staff and volunteers to prepare
and serve lunches, and helps clean up after the program. This Nutrition
Program, where seniors get a hot and nutritious lunch, is often the only
hot meal they eat for the day, and is a crucial service. Beverly
moves fast and is quite energetic. When she sees that something
needs to be done, she does it. These skills are essential, as the
program can often get hectic, with over 100 participants attending the
luncheon in a short span of time. When Beverly first started, she
worked two days a week, and she now volunteers a minimum of four hours.
As stated earlier, Beverly has made a positive impact on our environment
as well -- Beverly’s main mission is to “Reuse, Reduce and Recycle,”
and she has not only done this the past eleven years at the Kenneth Aitken
Center, but has taught and led staff, her fellow volunteers and senior
participants, to do the same. When staff and volunteers sit down
to eat, she brings cloth napkins for everyone to use. These simple,
but effective measures are helping the District save money, while educating
others on the importance of being “green” and protecting our environment.
It is an honor to recognize Beverly Suminski as the Volunteer of the
Month. She has proven herself vital to the Kenneth C. Aitken Senior
Center and has made a positive impact on the Senior Center, as well as
the environment. Beverly is dependable, well liked and is a hard
worker that everyone at the Kenneth Aitken Center admires and respects.
Beverly will be eligible for the Volunteer of the Year Award for 2009,
which will be announced in January of 2010.
